I was asked to write a short story describing my mom’s experience as a refugee from my 2nd generation perspective, for the Flight or Freedom blog. Flight or Freedom documents the stories of previous refugees to Canada, and raises awareness of how current federal immigration policies affect new refugees.
I have re-posted the piece I wrote on my own project blog, where I’m (slowly) compiling my family’s story of escaping the horrific Khmer Rouge regime. I wasn’t planning to tell my mom’s story from my own point of view when I started the project blog. But being asked to write this post was a good exercise for me, both as a writer and a daughter. I challenged myself to share personal reflections of my mom, rather than base the story on interviews with her. Which led me to step outside of myself for a moment and consider the influence of her past on my childhood.
